Activities around La Grande Maison
Vauban’house, probably the most famous personage in the history of France of the Nièvre, the Castle of Bazoche overlooks the small village of the same name and offers a beautiful view on Vézelay, not far from there.
Acquired in 1675 by the Marshal of Vauban, Sébastien Leprêtre, the place is transformed by the founder of the Genie in garrison. It is in this house that the brilliant architect of the largest fortresses in France will draw the largest fortresses.
Today owned by the descendants of the Maréchal’s eldest daughter, the Château opens to visitors almost all year round, from February to November according to seasonally adapted visiting schedules. Located 15 min from the Grande Maison, it can be a stopover to Vézelay or a break during a hike traced on the commune of Bazoche (we can tell you more).

Vézelay, an eternal hill, part of the UNESCO’s World Heritage , is gorgous in term of architecture, a beautifully preserved village, a walk with exceptional points.
At the top of the hill of the city Vézelay, the Basilica Sainte Madeleine is open to the public every day, all year round, from 8 -am to 8 pm without interruption.
It welcomes all those who come to pray with monks and nuns but also lovers of our patrimony who can contemplate the eardrum of the narthex and the historized capitals, the crypt and the magnificent light that literally fills the Nave.
Enjoy your day at Vézelay and do some sports – a leisure center is closed; Visit (and taste with moderation) the famous bier of Vézelay!
Located 23 km far away from La Grande Maison, the city Vézelay is the occasion to do a intense day of tourism in Burgundy region.
Abbey of the Pierre-qui-Vire
Founded in 1850, the Abbey of Pierre-qui-Vire, which was a hospital during the Great War, is today a high place of prayer that will delight the souls of believers.
She also owns a farm that offers to the region some of its finest dairy products: organic cheeses of Pierre-qui-Vire (which are of course on the menu of our breakfast at La Grande Maison).
Located at the place called “L’Huis Saint-Benoît”, 800 meters far away from the Abbey, it is exploited by 6 people who practice polyculture and breeding on 170 ha.
In addition to very good products, you will be able to discover cows of the Brown breed of the Alps and goats of the Alpine breed.
Located 30 km far from La Grande Maison it is an ideal destination for a picnic in the real nature. Do not hesitate to ask us for more information.
